Weekend Trips

Weekend Trips

You do not need a fortnight to see Jordan properly. You need a good route and someone who has already solved the logistics.

That is what these are. Two nights, three days, one region done thoroughly instead of five regions done at speed. Each one runs full-board — every meal, transfer, entry and experience included — so a weekend actually feels like a weekend.

Ten routes. Pick by what you want the weekend to feel like.

Golden Triangle

Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba in one loop. The Treasury, a zarb dinner, a night in a bubble tent, then camel and jeep across the desert before dropping to the Red Sea for a private yacht, snorkelling and a glass-bottom boat.

Cosmic Getaway

Petra by afternoon light, then an astro-archaeology session and telescope stargazing after the crowds leave. Day two moves to Wadi Rum for a jeep run, a sunset ramdha sand bath, zarb, and three hours under the darkest sky in the country. Optional overnight in the open desert.

Rebirth of Queens

A weekend built almost entirely on women-owned businesses. A heritage madhafa in As-Salt, hadab and henna, traditional dress, the Wish Cave. Then the Dead Sea — salt cave, mud, a farm-to-table lunch with oud and dabke, sunset meditation on the shore. Closes with a Moroccan bathhouse in Amman.

In The Footsteps of St John

Mahis and Fuheis with lunch in family homes, four churches across As-Salt, and the shrine of the Prophet Shu’aib. Day two runs Mkawer, Umm ar-Rassas, Madaba’s mosaics, Mount Nebo, Lot’s Church and the Baptism Site on the Jordan.

From Mu’tah to Yarmouk

Two battles, seven years apart, at opposite ends of one country. In 629 three commanders fell below Karak and were buried where they died. In 636, on the Yarmouk river, the Levant changed hands. Between them lie the companions’ shrines, the cave of Ahl al-Kahf, the Umayyad desert castles and Salah al-Din’s citadels. Coming soon.

Find Your Tribe — South

For solo travellers. As-Salt first, with henna, hadab and a mingalah tournament, buggy riding and a live-grill lunch. Then the Dead Sea with dabke over dinner, Petra’s Treasury, an afternoon yacht in Aqaba and a film under the open sky. Wadi Rum buggies before the goodbye dinner.

Find Your Tribe — North

Same premise, other half of the country. As-Salt, then Jerash and Ajloun Castle, Mar Elyas, calligraphy and a long forest hike. The night is at Azraq with a Druze dinner. Morning is a jeep run through Shaumari among the Arabian oryx, then an escape room in Amman.

Forest Trail

Two nights inside RSCN reserves, for people who want to walk. The cable car over Ajloun, a full day on the forest trails, a night in the cottages. Then Yarmouk for basket weaving, stone masonry and hadab making, the Muntamra Valley trail, and an iris hike timed to sunset.

Forest Retreat

The same forests at a slower pace. Ajloun’s cottages and cable car, then the Orjan village trail — a long, easy walk through olive groves and soap houses with brunch along the way, more table than trail. Yarmouk the next day for handicraft and a sunset that you watch rather than climb to.

Aqaba Coastal Escape

Fly down Thursday evening and be swimming by Friday morning. A private yacht with diving and lunch, a beach club afternoon, a night city tour, glass-blowing at a women-led workshop, snorkelling and a glass-bottom boat.
